Three Must Read Books for Cancer Fighters

If you are fighting cancer, you must have three books. Get them immediately.

One is the Bible. It contains critical advice for you especially at this time in your life. For many, this book might seem hard to read or even archaic, but you wouldn’t be more wrong. This book holds the key to everything in life.

Anytime someone tells me they are fighting cancer, I tell them abou the Bible, then I immediately tell them about another book.

When I was diagnosed with cancer, I walked into a bookstore not looking for a book on cancer, but I stumbled across one and it changed my life. Dr. Servan-Shreiber’s book, “Anti-Cancer: A New Way of Living,” taught me about cancer and what I could do about it. I felt less of a victim. His life story is featured in a new documentary, and the trailer is posted above.

The book’s shortcoming for me as a Christian is the spiritual aspect. Dr. Servan-Shreiber does talk about the spiritual side of life, but he never talks about Christianity.

That’s why I wrote my book, “Five Stones for Christians in Crisis.”

This book will help you gain faith, understand God better, and show you concrete ways to make it through the cancer fight or any tough time in your life. I wrote it immediately after going into remission. I kept writing it after coming out of remission eight months after chemotherapy.

If you are fighting cancer or going through any tough time, get these three books!

How David beat Goliath and lessons for Christians

Sumo wrestler Big dude against little dude. Professional warrior against sheep herder. Five smooth stones against helmet and shield.

Christians love to talk about David and Goliath because it’s a clear-cut story with a hero and villian and it’s easy to make everything a Goliath — illness, depression, overeating, etc.

But remember this is a real story, not an metaphor. Most observers probably thought this shrimp David was going to get his head bashed in. So how did he do it? Here’s a short list:

He ran forward.
David took the initiative. Where others ran away, David moved forward. I’m sure this surprised Goliath a little. Of course he didn’t care too much whether this curly-haired guy ran or walked. But I think David gained the upper hand because he went on the offensive.

What if the Bible had another name?

Bible

The Bible is of course the foundation of our faith, and I’ve noticed how publishers in the past few years have given the Good Book a bit of a makeover. New covers. New “Camo” versions in case you need that Bible to stay unseen in the jungle!

But what if we could give the Bible a new name? Instead of “The Books,” we got a little more creative? Maybe I could suggest a few new titles or possible subtitles for a little creativity on this Monday. Here’s my list:

  • The Snake, The Apple and The Cross
  • Broken But Fixed
  • When God Calls, Who Listens?
  • The Mysterious Case of Adam
  • Good News in a Bad World
  • The Only Solution
  • What Love Looks Like
  • This is Your Life
  • How to Fix a Broken Heart
  • The Meaning of Life
  • The Portrait of the Real Artist
  • The Not-So-Secret Life of God
  • Reaching Out Through the Darkness
  • Redemption
  • A Drink of Living Water
  • The Book of Life
  • This is How You Love
  • The Rest of the Story
  • One Last Chance at Forgiveness
What title would you give it?

Do you hear God talking to you?

listening

God can use different ways to speak to people. A good sermon. Advice from a friend. A donkey. A donkey?

For some people, God can seem very quiet at times. Maybe even stone cold silent. Even the most ardent Christian would admit they’ve never heard God speak audibly.

But a donkey? That’s what God used when he needed to get the attention of a prophet named Balaam, who was riding the donkey at the time.

The animal had seen an invisible angel with a sword standing in the road. God opened the mouth of the donkey to get Balaam’s attention and tell him about the angel.

That’s not the normal way God speaks. Today, he speaks to us primarily through The Bible. He speaks to us at church in various ways. But he also uses other people in our lives.

For me, more than a year ago my wife bought me the book, The Power of a Praying Husband. I just started reading it yesterday and it really spoke to me at this point in my life. (I also recommend these books to read.)

God can use The Bible, circumstances, other people, books, music, movies — if he can use a donkey, he can use anything! But you have to have discernment because not everything is from God. (God would never direct you to do anything that goes against what’s in The Bible.)

You have to have a relationship with God on a daily basis to understand when God is speaking to you. Sometimes, a book is just a good book. A donkey is just a donkey. But other times, if you listen carefully, God will use someone or something to get a message to you.

So how has God spoken to you?

List of Bible verses that give you faith

Christians aren’t perfect – we need to restore our faith each day. If we don’t, the worries and troubles of this world can sink you.

The Bible is a great guide to living. The list below from Purpose Driven Connection is great to have on hand when your faith is not strong. I’ve cut their list down some and added some comments below each point. Pray over these regularly!
  • I am crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. (Galatians 2:20)

God will work through you to achieve his purposes. Be confident – you are on his team!

  • The Son has set me free. I am free indeed! (John 8:36)

You don’t have to worry about anything. Take hope that nothing can separate you from God.

  • I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. (Philippians 4:13)

Do you really see what this verse says? Be strong because God will give you the power to overcome.

  • He who began a good work in me will be faithful to complete it. (Philippians 1:6)

You might have stumbled or maybe fell off but don’t worry – if you stick with God, he’ll stick with you to the end!

  • There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1)

No need to worry about past mistakes. If you confess your sins each day, God forgets them the moment you confess!

  • Nothing can ever separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:38-39)

Nothing stands between you and God. Not another person. Not any particular pain. Nothing.

  • In all things God works for the good of those who love him. (Romans 8:28)

Not all things are good but everything works out for good, even the bad times. Hang tight – God is working!

  • God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7)

I loved reading this verse while going through treatments for cancer. Each day, I tried to replace fear with God’s power.

  • My light and momentary troubles are achieving for me an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. (2 Corinthians 4:17)

Your pain now will seem so small in heaven. Can you believe that? Soon, you’ll look back instead of wondering when they’ll be over.

  • He is able to do immeasurably more than all I ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within me. (Ephesians 3:20)

Don’t box God in. He can do anything – far more than we can imagine!

  • God is for me! Who can be against me? (Romans 8:31)
