The mysterious aftermath of suffering

Silhouette Of A Tree

Now what?

That’s the question few consider after the divorce papers are signed; when the surgery is over; when the camera crews leave after the tornado. I found it to be the most surprising part of my journey through a life-threatening illness.

There’s this curious “space” that follows suffering or getting through a tough time. Definitely a kind of silence. You want to go back to normal but if you’re honest, you’ll realize you’ll never be normal again.

It’s not that you’re absorbed about yourself. Actually, I believe most people who’ve been through divorce, the death of a loved one or other crisis, would rather blend into the crowd and not be noticed at all. I’m sure there are many who do blend in but I think there are a lot who have to adjust in their return to normal.

What are the keys to “landing” on both feet following a crisis? You have to know your purpose and you have to know who you are.

God has put you here on Earth for a purpose. You’re not here by accident. So what’s the purpose? God wants everyone to know him through his son Jesus. Once you have God in your life, you have direction. God also gave you unique gifts or skills as a person. Those skills should be used to help others.

Secondly, you have to know who you are. It’s a bit strange to consider but who are you? This questions works in tandem with your purpose in life but it goes a little deeper. Are you someone who lives to help others? Are you a teacher? Do you live to lead others? Are you a father? A husband?

When you know who you are and are certain of your purpose in this life and you know what you need to do when you wake up each day. The distractions are easier to get around. You have a goal to accomplish.

The Purpose Driven Life is a great book to get started on a topic like this. Having a purpose will keep you on track for fulfilling your destiny so at the end of your life, you’ll have no regrets.

What’s the hardest part following a tough time for you?
